As this is a 3D bit of software, you have full control of your camera via a City-of-Heroes-like mouse look system. Bricks can be rotated around using the cursor keys, with the axes of rotation staying relative to your camera. Bricks can be placed either on a relative "ground" level, or attached to other bricks via the patented Lego studs. LDD consists of a list of individual Lego bricks that you can pick from (and it's a damn long list) and a "play area" where you actually build your creation. Granted, I could do the same if I had a storage unit of Lego bricks, but this is so, so much easier.Īs this isn't a game, I'll have to contrive some other way to section the review out. What this means is I can look up the instruction book of any Lego set ever made and just build it in LDD without having to spend a dime. Better yet, LDD is intended for free-form toy design, meaning it doesn't require you own the stuff you're making - you're supposed to be making your own unique stuff anyway. I've already recreated many of the sets I actually physically own, and I haven't even messed with my Millennium Falcon. However, since we don't have a "Toy Editor" forum (or even a "Software" forum, come to think of it), that's where this goes. It's not, however, a "game" in any sense of the word.

In all seriousness, though, LDD (Lego Digital Designer) is a pretty cool, very entertaining bit of software if you like anything lego-related. And you can get it for the low-low price of absolutely free, too. Hey, did you ever catch yourself thinking: "By golly! I'd love to play with Lego but I don't have the shelf space for the finished items, I don't have storage space for the boxes and the pieces are shredding my pieces into ribbons! Plus, I'm cheap and lazy!" Well, then Lego Digital Designer is for you! It's a 3D modelling application programmed and updated with all (well, most) of the existing mass-produced Lego pieces which allows you to build any set you want, whether it exists or not, out of as many pieces as your PC's graphics will handle.
